AUDITIONS

Q: How do I apply?

A: Please visit the Careers page on our website to find the best position suited to you. There you will find all the requirements needed to apply.

Q: Which positions are available and what qualifications do I need?

A: Please visit the Careers page on our website, click on the specific position you are interested in and read about the job description, necessary skills and submission requirements.

Q: English is not my first-language. Can I still apply?

A: English doesn’t have to be your mother-tongue, but you must be able to fluently speak and understand English to work onboard. During our interview process, we will be able to determine if you have the required competency to work on a cruise ship.

Q: Online Auditions vs. Live Auditions - what’s the difference?

A: We accept applications for both.
You may apply for an online audition from anywhere in the world. Your audition will be conducted online via video conference, so a strong internet connection is required.
A few times a year, we host live auditions with cruise lines. Information about these auditions are posted on our social media pages or you can subscribe to our newsletter to get the info sent straight to your inbox. You may only apply for a live audition that is taking place nearby your home, as you will not be reimbursed for any travel expenses you may incur to attend the audition.

Q: What is a media pack?

A: Your media pack or EPK (Electronic Press Kit) would consist of a biography, video showreel, promotional photos, and for certain positions – a repertoire list. Every applicant must submit a media pack. Please read our Media Pack Tips here for help putting together a stellar media pack.

Q: What happens after I submit my media pack?

A: Once your application is complete, we will review it. If you are suitable, we will be in touch to arrange an interview and for some positions we will arrange an online sight-reading audition with you.

BEFORE I GO

Q: What do I need before joining the ship?

A: When you have been offered a contract, you will need a couple of things before you go.
– A valid passport
– A full medical exam from an approved doctor
– Police Background Check
– Visa/s
A few other documents may be required, depending on the cruise line, your nationality and the itinerary of the ship, but our team will assist you in obtaining all the correct paperwork needed for your contract.

Q: Will I need to bring my own musical equipment?

A: Most musicians will be required to take their instruments and any necessary accessories along with them, like pedalboards and cables, etc. A list of what you will need to bring with you will be supplied before your contract starts.

Q: What clothes will I need to bring with me?

A: In regards to your casual attire, it will depend greatly on the itinerary of your ship. Off the ship, you may wear whatever you like, but there are certain dress codes on board that you will need to abide by, especially when performing and appearing in Guest Areas. Before you leave home, we will provide you with a Musician’s Manual, so that you’ll know exactly what to pack.

Q: How do I get to the ship? Do I need to pay for flights and a hotel? What about getting home after the contract - who pays for that?

A: All flights and accommodation are arranged by the cruise line. They will book flights from the closest major airport in your home country to the airport closest to where your ship docks. They also arrange for a hotel stay before you join the ship, as well as transportation from your hotel to the port on the day you sign on. You will not need to pay for your flights or hotel, however, you are responsible for getting yourself to and from the airport in your home country.

Q: What should I do if something goes wrong on my way to the ship?

A: We are just a call/ text away. Get in touch with us immediately about issues like delayed flights, immigration issues, lost luggage, hotel bookings, etc. We will do our best to assist you promptly as well as notify the cruise line of any issues that may affect your joining the ship on time.

LIFE ONBOARD

Q: What is the living situation on board?

A: Depending on the position, musicians either share a cabin with another member of the entertainment department or have a single private cabin.

Q: What will be my costs onboard?

A: Living onboard is wayyyyyy cheaper than living on land, because you will never have to worry about paying rent, commuting to work or having bills of any kind. There are services that are completely free to crew, such as accommodation, food, crew gym and self-service laundry. Crew can also avail of discounted prices at the onboard duty-free stores (for cosmetics, jewellery, perfume, tobacco, alcohol, etc); low prices on drinks/ snacks at the crew bar and discounts on shore excursions. Personal expenses, like toiletries, clothing, etc are entirely your responsibility. Most cruise lines also provide additional free resources to crew like a library to borrow books, board games and DVD’s or a learning centre to pick up a new skill or language.

Q: Is there internet access onboard? How can I stay in touch with people back home?

A: Wifi is available onboard at discounted crew rates but many of the ports of call offer free wifi either at the in-port crew centres or at nearby cafes, bars and restaurants. Phone cards can be purchased to make calls from your in-cabin phone and signing up for a pay-as-you-go mobile package is also an option, but beware of those roaming charges!

Q: Will I be allowed in guest areas?

A: Yes, musicians have staff privileges and are therefore allowed in most guest areas, including the lounges, bars, dining areas, theatres, gym & spa. But remember – Guest cabins are strictly off-limits and entering a guest cabin is grounds for dismissal!
The appropriate dress code must be worn at all times and you must follow the cruise line’s code of conduct whenever you are in guest areas.

Q: What can I do when I’m off-duty?

A: Outside of your performance schedule, you may have to attend rehearsals, team meetings or a training from time to time. Other than that, you will have lots of free time to relax or do something of interest like sunbath on the open deck, take an island tour, learn a new language in the crew training centre or workout in the gym.

Q: Are there zero-tolerance policies that I have to follow onboard?

A: Yes. The following are strictly prohibited and immediate grounds for termination:
drug use, alcohol abuse, fighting, stealing, harassment and fraternization with guests. Random drug and alcohol tests are administered onboard.

MONEY MATTERS

Q: How do I get paid?

A: Most cruise lines use an online system where your paycheck is automatically deposited into a bank account. There are ATMs on board. Most cruise lines pay employees in U.S Dollars.

Q: Is my salary tax-free?

A: This will depend on your nationality and country of residence. US Citizens working on cruise ships with a US home port would usually have a percentage of their salary automatically deducted for taxes. Most other nationalities will not have anything deducted from their paychecks, but might have to pay taxes to their respective government if required to declare income earned abroad. You are advised to check with an accountant in your home country for more information.

Q: Can I accept tips from guests?

A: If a guest would like to show appreciation by handing you a cash tip, you may accept it. However, actively promoting guest tips (tip jar, open guitar case, etc) is not allowed except for some positions on certain cruise lines.

A: Premier Entertainment International charges all musicians a commission (a small percentage of your salary) But – our casting and audition process is completely free and you will not be charged a commission until after you’ve arrived on the ship and started working. All assistance with audition prep, contract acquisition and completing onboarding documents is provided free of charge.
